Laura Johnson
MELANIE OSBORNE, PRIVATE EYE AT THE HARLEM BOOK FAIR
At the Harlem Book Fair, held July 23, many of the author booths sported their own unique marketing twists. Next to the Akashic Books table, where I was stationed, Laura Johnson clocked a full eight hours in the blazing sun promoting her book, "Melanie Osborne: The Making of a Female Private Eye." Johnson enlisted a rotating crew of female friends, who all followed her meticulously choreographed book selling techniques. It all seemed a bit silly to me - right up until I noticed that Johnson was far outselling us, despite our much wider selection.
